Chelsea defender Reece James has expressed his delight at returning to the England squad, scoring his first goal with a stunning free-kick.

James started for England in Monday’s 3-0 World Cup qualifier over Latvia, his first appearance for the Three Lions in two years and his first start in two-and-a-half years.

“For a long time, I felt discourage for two and a half years. So I’m very happy to be call up to the national team again and happy to play.”

“I saw the wall and felt I could go through it. Thankfully it went in. It was a bit of a surprise to see it go in,” James said after the game. Where he was reunited with former boss Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea. 

James won the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea in 2021. And says the new England boss has been direct about what he expects from his squad during the qualification process and beyond.

“His ideas are clear, his goals and his targets,” he added.

“He set them out from the minute he came in, and we have one objective. It starts with this international and we have to keep on building right up to the World Cup.”
